Does homework really infringe on family life? Could that extra time spent a day on schoolwork be allotted to other family activities?

One meath student thinks so, and he is calling on the government for change.

The motivation behind scrapping the age-old after school activity comes as nine-year-old, Finn Savino said we must "let kids have the time to be kids".

Finn has autism and is calling for a more inclusive school set-up for children with disabilities.

The young boy has thought out eight reasons why homework needs to be banned and detailed them in an email to all TDs and the Department of Education.

The idea of getting rid of homework was popular amongst his fourth class friends in Clonmellon National School, and the idea even got him elected to the student council.

In the open letter, Finn argued his case saying "children already spent around six hours in school every day and are probably tired afterwards."

Therefore, homework was branded as "bad" and the extra hour spent on it was "extremely unfair," according to the pupil.

"Homework takes away quality time with friends and family and active time is also taken away which is putting children's health at risk," he said.

"School work should be done at school and not at home," he added. "Home life is meant to be fun and homework is certainly not fun for a lot of children. Let kids have the time to be kids."

Not to leave the teachers out, Finn claimed that the current homework system was impacting them negatively too.

"Homework causes stress and teachers are teaching less because they have to correct homework."

His campaign has been backed by his fellow classmates.

"All the students agree with me. I especially think homework is bad for those with special needs, like me, who are really exhausted when they come home in the evenings," Finn told The Examiner.

Whether you agree or not with banning homework, you have to admire his determination.
