We have heard quite a few stories of parents in the UK being fined for taking their children out of school during term-time, and this latest story proves why it is such a divisive topic.

A couple appeared in court and were fined almost £300 over taking their children on a holiday during term-time to help them to get over a year full of tragedy.

Roy and Jenny Davies wanted to help their kids Alistair and Rhiannon through the traumatic time, during which they lost a loved one, and mum Jenny underwent emergency surgery which left her unable to walk.

However, due to strict laws prohibiting children being taken out of school during term-time without permission, the couple were hit with a £60 fine by Alistair’s school.

The Davies refused to pay the fine due to exceptional circumstances, and were subsequently prosecuted by their local council.

They were ordered to appear in court in Taunton, Somerset where, despite judges admitting that they sympathised with the couple, they were ordered to pay £290.

Needless to say, the couple are fuming over their treatment at the hands of authorities in Alistair’s school, and have gone public with their story.

Explaining the reason behind the trip to Corfu in October of last year, dad Roy said: “We needed quality time as a family as the children had a very dramatic 18 months. The children spent their summer holidays running around fetching things for their mum. If we had been worried about their education, we would not have taken them out of school.”
