Gardai will investigate reports that former Irish TD Patrick Nulty sent lewd messages to a schoolgirl.

Gardai in the Republic of Ireland are expected to question the politician as well as examine his computer and mobile phone used to send the inappropriate messages to the teenager.

The former Dublin West TD resigned from the Dáil on Saturday, hours before a national newspaper published a story saying he sent explicit messages to the 17-year-old.

The 31-year-old admitted to sending “inappropriate messages via Facebook” to the girl while under the influence of alcohol.

It is understood the girl's mother made a formal complaint to Gardaí over the weekend.

Mr Nulty is also accused of sending more messages to other women, including friends of the schoolgirl, who have reportedly come forward with complaints.
