For anyone out there whose family is involved in GAA, you will know all too well that community is a huge part of the game and culture.

In fact, community is what fuels the sport – which is why SuperValu’s #BehindTheBall campaign is so important.

As part of the campaign, SuperValu is hosting volunteer camps across the country. This is to encourage and increase more volunteers to help out at GAA clubs all over Ireland.

Helping out with the campaign will be a host of GAA ambassadors, including Lee Keegan, and Alan and Bernard Brogan. The latter knows first-hand just how important volunteers are to the culture and running of the GAA.

“Volunteers are vital for sports at a grass-roots level, so it’s great to see local retailers get behind the local clubs and encourage, educate and inspire volunteers to get involved,” said Bernard.

“From coaching to car-pooling, washing jerseys to refereeing; there really is something for everyone.

“So, whether you’re a member of your local GAA club or not, this is the perfect opportunity to give back to children in your local community.”

Volunteer camps will take place in the following locations, on these dates:

SuperValu GAA Volunteer Camp Mayo:

  •  The Parke GAA grounds, Castlebar, 22nd August at 7pm

SuperValu GAA Volunteer Camp Dublin:

  • Skerries Harp’s Pitch, Skerries, 2nd September at 11am

SuperValu GAA Volunteer Camp Cork:

  • Midleton CBS, Midleton, 9th September at 11am

 SuperValu GAA Volunteer Camp Meath:

  • Trim, 30th September at 2pm

If you would like to make a difference, simply sign up for the campaign. You can do so either in your local SuperValu, or through this Facebook link

Those who register will receive #BehindTheBall tokens, which they can use to allocate to a local GAA club of their choice.

Through the nine-week programme, SuperValu retailers are aiming to donate a whopping 55,000 GAA First Touch footballs to clubs across the country.

What a worthy cause – we will definitely be throwing our support behind the initiative.
