Extra-curricular classes are a great way for your child to make new friends, start a hobby or stay fit and healthy. However, bombarding them with too many activities can be counter-productive so it is important you choose ones that your little one will benefit most from.

Here are six really handy tips to help you make your decision:

Think about what your child is interested in

While you may want your youngster to have a wide variety of different activities it is important you allow them become involved in things they are interested in. If your little one loves painting and drawing sign them up for art or if kicking ball around is more their style get them involved in sports.

Ask your child

It is important that you include your kids in your decisions as much as possible, remember they will be the ones actually taking part.

Look at what’s on offer

There is no point signing your son or daughter up for a class that involves a race across town, unless absolutely necessary. Have a look at what activities are offere by the school and then what's on around your area before you look further afield. Nobody will benefit if you are always rushing to get to a class for a certain time.

Choose and age appropriate class

Make sure you sign your little one up for an age appropriate class. Activities like horse riding have an minimum age requirement so make sure you stick to it. Ask the organiser or teacher if you are not sure your little one can handle it.

Look at the cost

After school activities can get pretty expensive after you pay the initial entrance fee. Ballet classes can require you to fork out for new shoes and leotards while something like swimming can be a cheap activity to keep up.

Don’t overschedule

School can be pretty draining on your little one before adding on homework, playtime and after school classes, so limit the amount they are involved in. If your youngster has a lot on, try to spread activities out across the seven days in order for them to have time to relax and wind down.

After school activities are important to help your little one meet new people, handle new situations, gain self confidence and a sense of pride.
