The time between school and dinner can be pretty hectic. Everybody arrives home hungry and full of that after-school energy. So, what is the best way to keep your children occupied while you try to get dinner organised and tomorrow’s lunches ready?

Rather than simply watching TV, these tips will help keep your little ones occupied and entertained while you try to get things organised:

Snacktime
It may be a good idea to give your little ones a small snack after they finish school. Often, they can be very hungry around this time, but you need to ensure you keep it small so they aren’t full before dinner.

Help you
This may seem like an unconstructive idea but your little ones can actually be a great help to you in the kitchen. You can ask them to do little tasks such as stirring or mixing, or even setting the table if they are old enough. They will love that they are helping you out and they will also be learning new skills.

Exclusive game
If there is a game that your children are only allowed to play at a certain time, chances are they will never tire of it. Whatever it may be, from Cluedo to Operation, or even a pack of cards, if between school and dinner is when they get to do it, they’ll look forward to it everyday.

Reading corner
Many children love to read at nighttime, but it could be a nice idea to create a reading space near the kitchen so your kids can be occupied and you can also keep a close eye on them. If you have a stack of books nearby that they generally don’t see upstairs, they will love to come and sit in a quiet spot for an hour or two.
