Major Covid outbreak in Kerry school means quiet Christmas for nearly 400 students

A significant Covid-19 outbreak has been detected in a Kerry school, resulting in nearly 400 students and teachers having to restrict their movements for 14 days, until December 30.

It was reported yesterday evening that 17 people from the school have now tested positive for coronavirus, which is the largest outbreak Ireland has seen in an educational setting.

The HSE have said that a public health team are investigating the outbreak, and contact tracing is underway.

As a result, all other students and teachers from Scoil Mhuire in Killorglin will now be sent for two Covid tests, several days apart, and are asked to restrict their movements for 14 days, meaning, “the child does not go to school.”

They are also being asked to not visit vulnerable people, not let visitors into the house, and that household members belonging to these students and teachers also restrict their movements until their test results come back negative.

This means that many households, and children in particular are going to have to face an even quieter Christmas than they had anticipated.

As a result of the recent worrying case figures in schools, a special Cabinet meeting has been scheduled for December 29.
