Just when we thought we'd reached the end of the cold spell, it turns out we've to brace ourselves for a week of bitterly cold weather - and potentially get ready to keep our kids at home as schools could close as the days go on.

Met Eireann has warned parents to prepare for school closures this week as the so-called 'Beast from the East' heads for Ireland.

Eastern areas will be affected by snow showers early in the week. The showers are expected to spread throughout the country by mid-week and at the moment, there are two Status Yellow warnings and Status Orange in place for Dublin, Carlow, Kildare, Laois, Meath, Louth and Wicklow, with the forecaster saying that "scattered snow showers late Tuesday and Tuesday night could lead up to 4cm - 6cm of snow by Wednesday morning with widespread frost and icy conditions."

And in a video weather report published on RTE, forecaster Joanna Donnelly said: "Just to remind you, Yellow level warnings mean be aware; Orange level warnings mean be prepared and Red level warnings mean take action.

"The possibility of school closures during the mid or later end of the week is a real possibility with this extreme event coming our way," according to The Mirror

Met Éireann has recommended using the government’s Be Winter Ready website for advice on how to handle the frosty conditions and to take extreme caution if you do have to travel.
