Schools across the country are set to reopen tomorrow, October 18, according to the Minister for Education.

Richard Bruton took to Twitter to share the news, as the country recovers from the devastation of Hurricane Ophelia.

“Schools, VTOS and Youthreach centres will reopen tomorrow, and school transport will be back in operation, subject to any damages experienced at a local level,” he tweeted.

“As always, schools must ensure safety of those in their care and give due consideration to this when making the decision to reopen.”

Minister Bruton went on to thank everyone involved in the closures and clean-ups over the course of the last two days.

“I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all those principals, teachers, students and parents who co-operated fully with the safety measures in place over the past two days,” he added.

Minister Bruton also shared a link to information on ‘Emergency Works’, for State-owned buildings damaged in the storm.

Schools throughout the country were closed yesterday, to ensure safety for all school students and staff. The closure was then extended to today, in the wake of widespread damage.

Photos and videos captured the devastation of Ophelia. In Cork, one member of the public watched as phenomenal winds pulled the roof from Douglas Community School.

Tragically, three lives were claimed by the storm; with 58-year-old Clare O’Neill, 31-year-old Michael Pyke, and 33-year-old Fintan Goss losing their lives.

We are thinking of all those affected by the tragedies.
