You think you are leaving your children in the safest possible environment when you drop them off to school, but as recent tragic events have proven, this isn’t always the case.

A mother in the States is this week considering taking legal action against her daughter’s school, after the seven-year-old was left brain-dead and on life support from choking on a sandwich at school.

According to reports, staff at the New York school failed to act immediately when little Noelia Echavarria began choking on her food. Not only did they fail to contact the emergency services as soon as Noelia got into difficulty, but it wasn’t until a passing EMT was flagged down in the street that the child received emergency treatment.

The responding medic at the scene, who had been transporting another student to hospital at the time, claims that Noelia had already turned blue by the time he got to her – meaning that she had already been choking for quite some time.

“People were screaming, but no one was doing anything,” he told local media.

Noelia’s mother, Ana Iris Santiagosaid, is reported to have suffered multiple seizures after seeing the state her daughter was in. She told reporters: “They should have saved her life.”

The family is now considering suing the school on the grounds that they failed to act in time.

Our hearts go out to them at this difficult time.
