There have been some rather alarming stories in recent times about the number of children going to school hungry, so you would think that helping these little ones out would be applauded.

This, however, was not the case for a US mother-of-two, who was fired from her elementary school job over giving out free hot lunches to children without money.

Della Curry worked as the kitchen manager at Dakota Valley Elementary School in Denver, and would regularly feed the children who could not afford nourishing, hot lunches, free of charge.

According to the school’s rules however, Della was going far beyond what management deemed appropriate. The rules state that, where a child forgets their lunch and fails to qualify for a subsidised meal, they get a hamburger bun with a single slice of cheese, and a small carton of milk.

Ms Curry – who has in the past paid for children’s lunches with her own earnings – went public after her sacking, shaming the school over their provisions.

“I’ll own up that I broke that law. The law needs to change,” she told CBS, adding, “If me getting fired for it is one way that we can try to change this, I’ll take it in a heartbeat.”

Commenting on the move to fire Ms Curry, a representative from the local school district said: “According to our practice, we provide hot meals to students the first three times they forget their lunch money and charge their parents’ accounts. The fourth time, we provide a cheese sandwich and milk…The district has worked to keep lunch prices low and still meet the federal nutrition requirements.”
