Admissions policies in schools in the Republic of Ireland have come under fierce scrutiny in recent times, but it looks as though many discriminatory rules are set to be abolished.

New legislation being proposed in the Dáil will see waiting lists, admission fees and other discriminatory admissions policies scrapped.

The Admissions Bill, which was announced this morning, is set to be published before the end of the week and will outline this major area of education reform.

While the move will come as good news to parents all over the country, many will no doubt be disappointed to hear that admissions rules relating to religious ethos will still stand.

The Bill, proposed by Minister for Education Richard Bruton, is currently being considered by the Oireachtas committee.

We will keep you updated on the progress of the Bill, and share more information as soon as it emerges.
