A fee-paying school in Co. Dublin has topped the league table for third-level access, according to The Irish Times' annual Feeder Schools supplement.

Holy Child School in Killiney nabbed the top spot in the annual report which looks at the number of students who go on to college or university after school.

Cistercian College, Roscrea, Co. Tipperary, Sandford Park School, Sandford Road, Ranelagh, Dublin 6 and Gonzaga College, Dublin 6 (all fee-paying) nabbed the second, third and fourth slots.

According to the publication, the report highlights the social divide between areas in the capital; Dublin 4, 6, 6W had the highest number of students progression to third level, while Dublin 8, 11 and 24 had the lowest.

Talking about the results, Minister Richard Bruton said that there is more to school than being top of a league table.

“If you define success around just one dimension, such as exams, then schools could be seen to improve by turning away the children with greater needs, for example,” he told the Irish Times

“[This] would be entirely in conflict with what we want to achieve for our education system, including breaking down barriers of disadvantage, responding to special education needs and developing alternate pathways into education.”
