There has been widespread debate over how to normalise LGBT issues for young children, and one UK politician has been vocalising his suggestions this week.

Liberal Democratic leadership contender Norman Lamb has this week said that making popular and well-loved characters such as Peppa Pig gay would go a long way towards educating children about same-sex relationships from a young age.

In an interview with Pink News, Lamb said that TV companies need to think about introducing gay characters to children’s programmes.

“We have to be true to the legislation we’ve passed. The legislation very clearly says that a loving relationship between two people of the same sex is of equal value, so in every that we then do, as a society, we need to reinforce that, not deny it,” he said.

When asked as to whether there should be gay characters on shows like Peppa Pig, Lamb added: “It should absolutely not be out of bounds, which it appears to be at the moment.”

He added that banning gay characters from children’s programmes “tells that teenager, who is struggling to come to terms with their sexuality, that there is something not quite normal about how they feel.”

Irish TD Jerry Buttimer today supported Lamb’s comments, telling The Star: “The curriculum here has changed to reflect diversity and inclusivity of our population, and I think any attempt to normalise the LGBT community will be welcomed.”
