Taoiseach Enda Kenny is to address the Irish Primary Principals Network conference today amid reports that the organisation is concerned about students’ mental health.

According to Maria Doyle IPPN president, primary school children are dealing with deeply worrying situations on a daily basis in schools which is affecting their mental health.

Sadly, children in junior infants are, despite their young age, displaying “significant signs of depression”.

“We have children in primary schools speaking about suicide, we have them self-harming,” explained Ms Doyle.

"Now this would not have been the case 10, 15 years ago, but it currently becoming a problem at primary level."

At the same conference yesterday, Minister for Education Jan O’Sullivan confirmed the move to abolish Rule 68 of the 1998 Education Act, that gave privileged status to the teachings of religion in primary schools.
