The simplest recipe for a Halloween bake-off!
90g unsalted butter, softened
90g sugar
90g flour
2 eggs
1 orange zest
1 tsp baking powder
For the topping
Juice of 1 orange
50g sugar
Red gel food colouring
Fake knife
Preheat oven to 175°C. Grease and line a loaf tin.
Put all the cake ingredients together into a large bowl and mix thoroughly. Pour into the prepared loaf tin and bake for 45 minutes or until a skewer inserted comes out clean.
While the cake is baking, make the syrup. Mix the orange juice and sugar together.
When the cake is cooked, pierce all over the top with a fine skewer and pour the syrup over the top of the cake. Let cool then using a knife, create a fake wound in the middle of the cake. Add some red food colouring in the incision, letting it drizzle on the sides as if it was an open wound. Plant a fake knife in the cake.
