The top secondary schools in Ireland for the year of 2017 have been revealed, in the annual Sunday Times Best Schools Guide.

The top five is dominated by girls schools this year, with Laurel Hill Coláiste FCJ, in Limerick, taking the top spot overall.

Each school in the guide is ranked based on the percentage of students who progress on to university or an institute of technology, over a three-year period.

There will no doubt be celebrations for the staff of Laurel Hill, which topped the list, with an impressive 93.7 percent of its students heading on to third level institutions.

In second place, is the fee-paying Scoil Mhuire, in Cork, with an average 89.6 percent of students heading on to third level.

Just behind them, then, is Salerno Jesus and Mary Secondary School, in Galway's Salthill, with 87.1 percent.

The top five is completed by two further girls schools: the Teresian School, in Dublin's Donnybrook (with 85.9 percent), and Coláiste Íosgáin in Booterstown, Dublin (with 85.1 percent).

The top 10 is completed as follows:

6. Glenstal Abbey School, Murroe, Limerick

7. Presentation Brothers College, Mardyke, Cork

8. Christian Brothers College, Sidney Hill, Cork; joint with Gonzaga College, Ranelagh, Dublin
