A school in the States has come under fire after parents took exception to the information provided to their children during a lecture from the Pregnancy Care Centre of Wayne County.

One parent, stunned that their child was reportedly told that marriage prevents STDs and having children outside of marriage was wrong, penned a letter to the American Atheist Legal Centre to outline her concerns following the course.

Based on Melanie Wolf’s concern, the AALC – a non profit organisation which seeks to maintain the separation of church and state – contacted the Wooster City School District superintendent, Dr. Michael Tefs, and related the subject matter discussed during the session.

Outlining their main grievances, the AALC wrote: “These notions are blatantly false and certainly shouldn’t be communicated to anyone, much less teens and preteens.”

While acknowledging that school officials may have a certain stance on particular matters, the AALC were eager to illustrate the difference between offering an opinion and providing facts.

“Whether the Wooster City School District teacher, principals or school board approve of emergency contraception or abortion should have no bearing on providing factual information to students about reproductive health and choices, especially when discussing sexual assault.”

Having suggested the school offer an alternative approach to the subject in the form of a health care provider or representative from Planned Parenthood, Melanie Wolf was told that “such information would not be presented to the students.”

Further to this, Dr. Tefs has wholly refuted the claims contained in the letter written by the AALC.

Dismissing the claims, Dr. Tefs said: “We can speak with absolute certainty when we say these claims made by the American Atheist were not only false, but ridiculous.”

Echoing Dr. Tef’s assertions, the Pregnancy Centre asserted: “The allegations made against the Pregnancy Care Centre are unfounded and have been repudiated by those who were present at the program in question.”

It is understood that Melanie has stood by her allegations and continued to criticise the school on their approach to the matter, telling The Huffington Post: “The school district has no right to present misleading and inaccurate information to my child – or any child.”
