A school has been forced to apologise after its extreme punishment for pupils who were late for school was revealed.

Laura Hoover, whose grandson Hunter attends Lincoln Elementary School in the US, posted pictures of Hunter’s punishment to social media.

The young boy, who was one minute late for school that morning, was forced to eat his lunch in the school canteen behind a screen that ectioned him off from his classmates.

The boy has been accused of “chronic tardiness” by his school, but his grandmother says he should not be punished for something that is out of his control.

“His momma’s car sometimes doesn’t like to start right up. Sometimes he’s a couple of minutes late to school.

“They have done this to him six times for something that is out of this baby's control! They make a mockery of him in front of the other students! His mom found him there, crying, and took him home for the day.”

Since the story went viral, Hunter’s parents have since received an apology from the school, who have promised not to use the controversial punishment anymore; instead they will make late students do “catch-up work” in a separate, supervised room.
