We’re all guilty of a little mollycoddling every now and again, but there comes a time when the line has to be drawn; whether or not the school in this report has the right idea, however, is up for debate.

Catholic High School for Boys, in the US, has come in for both praise and criticism this week after sharing a controversial notice regarding its policy on ‘problem-solving’.

The notice read: “If you are dropping off your son’s forgotten lunch, books, homework, equipment, etc., please TURN AROUND and exit the building. Your son will learn to problem-solve in your absence.”

In the caption, school management added: “Welcome to Catholic High. We teach reading, writing, arithmetic, and problem-solving.”

Now, our kids are as forgetful as we are half of the time, so it’s not surprising to see that some parents are a little unhappy with the school’s note.

“You can’t problem-solve on an empty stomach, without your schoolbooks or if you’re depressed from getting in trouble because you forgot everything. Give them a break!” wrote one unimpressed Facebook user.

Meanwhile, another chimed in: “Kids WILL be kids. And even the most responsible people forget things. Punishing them, or even ENDANGERING them, as would be the case with a diabetic/hypoglycaemic student who forgets their lunch or medical necessities, is a lawsuit waiting to happen.”

Others, however, praised the school’s policy as ‘teaching done right’.

“I agree with this sign 100 percent...Being organised at home is where it starts, and doing it the night before – not in the morning, when you are leaving for school,” wrote a ‘mother of five, grandmother of eight’.
