After two months of relaxed summer mornings, mums will be feeling stressed as they deal with the pre-school rush that comes with the start of a new term. Tempers will be frayed, items will be forgotten, people will be late – and of course the kids will probably start an argument before they’re even out the door.

We love making our mums’ lives less chaotic, so here are some tips to deal with the morning rush:

Give yourself time: It’s tough to get out of bed any earlier than you absolutely have to, but rising just 10 minutes earlier can give you a mental advantage and leave you feeling more in control.

Regular morning routine: A routine is your best asset during the morning rush as it brings order to proceedings. A routine allows family members to automatically fall into a familiar process, which makes getting ready easier and prevents aimless wandering.

The bathroom: Demand for the bathroom is the root of many morning arguments, so putting a schedule in place could save you a lot of grief. Ideally you should get the kids to shower the night before to lessen the amount of time they need to spend in the bathroom. If you have bathroom hogs, set a timer and limit the amount of the time they have – they’ll soon get into the habit of moving quicker.

The shower: Anyone that needs to shower in the morning should be prioritised in terms of who needs to leave the house first. If everyone leaves at the same time, then let the more efficient family members use the shower first. If you allow the ‘slow’ person in first, they will only delay everyone and cause unnecessary friction. Leave them until the end and if they’re not moving fast enough, they will be the only ones to suffer.

Be prepared: Make sure the kids have their bags packed, notes signed and homework done the night before. Set the table for breakfast and give some thought to making lunches for the next day (if you have any energy left). These little things will save you time and stress the next morning.

No TV or computer: Cartoons, movies and social networking sites are all distractions that will slow family members down in the morning. Keep the television and computer switched off – there’s no need for either of them and there shouldn’t be time to sit idly in front of a screen.
