Most parents expect that they will have to offer lots of advice and guidance for their preschool children and toddlers, but they expect that their older children will be able to get through their morning routine quickly. However, this just isn’t the case for a lot of children.

When your child first starts school, it’s time for parents to become the referee in getting them out the door! It’s all part of being a parent, trying to get them out of the door in a timely manner.
Let’s not forget, that you will also have to help find socks and shoes that have mysteriously disappeared, put toothpaste on toothbrushes, prepare lunches and make sure they eat a breakfast.

Here are some really great tips that have already helped some of our mums:

The week before school starts back, map out your own perfect morning routing. Ask yourself, what time do kids need to be dressed, have eaten their breakfast and have left the house by? Younger children will need practice before they get the swing of things. Begin by getting to kids to bed early a week before school is due to start back. You can’t make them sleep but you can make sure that lights are out early enough to make it easier for them to get a proper night's sleep.

Firstly, get yourself up, dressed and ready first. Everything will go more smoothly when you’re available to help you children each step of the way.

Give lots of reminders. Many children will learn with ease that they have to move through the morning routine quickly but others never seem to remember that yes, they have to brush their teeth every morning! To avoid endless nagging, reward good behaviour and organisation where deserved.

State the obvious. Say to them “You have your uniform on, now put on your socks and shoes.” If you need to prompt them again, simply say “Socks” or ask them “What do you need to do now?” so your child will get the hang of it by himself.

Try to be patient, avoid shouting or yelling. Children will easily begin to associate harsh treatment as part and parcel of the routine.

You want your child to be up and ready for school on time with as little hassle as possible so he has the best possible start to his day.
