School is tough enough without your youngster not wanting to go in because they don’t get along with their teacher.

But before you despair or head in to demand your little one change room, there are plenty of things that you can do to ensure the classroom experience is a much happier one for them.

1. Listen to them

Make sure you actually sit down and listen to their frustrations and try to understand what is going on in the classroom. The problem might not be with the teacher themselves but rather them not being aware that your little one is struggling with a particular subject.

2. Respond correctly

How you respond is key to helping your child with their problem. If you immediately say something like “ah, sure you only have them for the year” your little one will resign themselves to the fact that the next nine months are not going to be particularly enjoyable. However, if you tell them that you are here to help in any way you can they will be more open and honest with you.

3. Help your child to deal with it on their own

Use the problem as a teaching experience and empower your child to be able to handle any and all kinds of tough situations. If your youngster feels intimidated or left out suggest they write a letter to the teacher explaining their concerns – you can help them to phrase it in a way that the teacher won’t feel like they are a target or at fault.

4. Wait a few days before you do anything

It can take a while before your child settles into the school routine after a long summer, so give them time to adjust to the schedule and see it things don’t right themselves on their own. Support your child throughout but hold off on doing anything too rash that will have future implicates until you are 100% certain that there is a major problem.

5. Talk to the teacher

If things don’t seem to be getting any better make an appointment with the teacher explaining that your little one is having some difficulty. The teacher may not realise that there is a problem and might need someone to bring it to their attention.
