Reading doesn’t come naturally to every child. In fact, many kids would rather stare at a computer game or a smartphone than go anywhere near a book. However, reading is an extremely important part of growing up and establishing an interest in reading from an early age will help your little one in the long term.

These five tips will help you get your youngster interested in reading without you having to break a sweat.

Fill your home with books
Make sure you fill your home with books so that when your little one does become interested, there is an abundance of stories and books for them to choose from. Why not dedicate a special area in their room to reading - even if they are not interested in reading just yet having books there might encourage them to pick one up.

Books that interest them
There is no point encouraging them to read books that they have no interest in whatsoever. When it comes to choosing a book for them, go for one that you know they will love. If they are into adventure, horses, animals, space or sports go for a book around that topic. While it is ideal that your child reads a variety of books, your first hurdle is getting them interested in them in the first place.

Go electronic
If your little one only has eyes for the computer screen, you need to get to them this way. Instead of giving them a paper book, opt instead for a Kindle or other electronic book. This way you are both happy – your son or daughter is reading but they still get to use a computer.

Praise them
When your child picks up a book, praise them. Children love nothing more than being recognised for good work and they will associate reading with receiving praise. Say well done when they pick up a book and engage them in conversation about it.

Read to them
Your little one is never too old to be read to. Allow them to pick a story and read it to them before bedtime. Make sure you choose a book that you know they will want to listen to and, if possible, encourage them to read a couple of pages or a chapter after you have read to them – but don’t force it.

Reading is an important part of life and should be made to be an enjoyable experience for you and your little one.
