Uniform shopping can be a nightmare, especially during the summer when the last thing your youngster wants when it's hot outside is to put on a wool jumper. And, considering this is the last weekend before all schools go back, it is guaranteed to be a difficult and ardious task as you battle through queues of other mums trying to pick up last minute items.

Unfortunately, this is not a shopping trip that can be made easier by leaving the kids at home, so we have complied a list of handy tips to make it go smoothly.

1. Make a plan
Plan your day: the shops you will be visiting, what exactly you need to buy, where you will get the shoes/runners and whether you can get it all in one place. This will pevent you having to spend the entire afternoon traipsing around the shops.

2. Leave the younger kids at home
Unless you need to buy uniforms for all your kids, try to only bring the one who actually needs to get something. This way you won’t have countless voices saying they are bored or looking for food, and it will make the process a whole lot quicker.

3. Avoid peak time
If possible, avoid going to the uniform store at peak time when you know there will be queues and lots of people. Early morning or late evening is usually the best time as there will likely be fewer customers, even at the last weekend.

4. Don’t go hungry
Never bring your child shopping when they are hungry  - it will just end in disaster. Give them a good meal before heading off, and pop some snacks and water into your bag in case you end up taking longer then intended.

5. Dress them lightly
Depending on the weather, try to dress your child in as little clothing as possible: shorts and a T-shirt if it’s sunny or a top with a zip if it’s chilly. This will make trying things on in the dressing room a lot easier.

6. Break it up
To make the day a little less of a drag on your child, schedule in some breaks or alternate between shopping and letting them choose something to do. You will have to endure fewer tanturms and moans of "this is boring!"
