The dark mornings and evenings are a sign that winter is well and truly underway. And this time of the year can be a little tough and disheartening, but it doesn’t have to be.

With a little bit of imagination, and our eight fun activities, you and your children can have lots of fun, even if it is pretty dark outside.

Explore with a torch

Torches are so much fun, especially outside where it is really dark and a little bit spooky. Gather as many as you can and try to find creepy crawlies and nocturnal animals hiding in the bushes.

Glow stick relay race

Pick up a few glow sticks in your local toy shop or discount stores and have a race. Put everyone into two or three teams, giving each team a glow stick.

Hide and seek

Make hide and seek that little bit harder by playing it in the dark. We don’t recommend you play this outside as it might not be safe unless the kids hide in groups of two or three, but it can work really well inside if you turn off all the house lights. The person who is on has to use a torch to find those hiding.

Go stargazing

Grab a few blankets, head outside and do a bit of stargazing. You will need to have a decent clear night to do this, but when you do it will be amazing.

Shadow puppets

Have someone shine a torch onto a wall and use your hands and arms to make shadow puppets. Encourage everyone to be as creative as possible.

Play a board game

If the weather is a little nasty outside, cuddle up by the radiator and have a family board game night. You are sure to have lots of laughs and fun.

Painting in the dark

Try painting in the dark to see what creative and crazy artwork everyone can produce. It doesn’t need to be pitch black – you do need to at least be able to see the paint brush.

Go for a night time family walk

Put on your hi-vis jackets and head out for a family walk. The streets look pretty amazing in the evenings.
