9 in 10 teachers have said that they don’t believe their schools are ready for the new revised Junior Cert which is starting in September.

A survey carried out by the Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland (ASTI) revealed that only 11% of teachers believe that their schools have the capacity to carry out the new changes.

The remaining 89% believe their school “has limited, little or no capacity” to introduce the changes.

Ruairi Quinn, the Minister for Education and Skills has proposed that the first cycle of the changes will begin in September when a revised English syllabus is released for first years in Irish secondary schools.

Sally Maguire, ASTI president, expressed her concern at these findings, "The fact that 89% of teachers do not believe their school has the capacity to implement the Minister's Junior Cycle proposals is alarming."

The new Junior Cert will be gradually introduced over and eight year period.
