A primary school in Cork has become the first in the country to provide every student with a iPad after an anonymous donor gave a substantial donation.

The principal of Bishop Murphy Memorial School, James O’Donoghue, called the donation the “opportunity of a lifetime”.

“It is fantastic for us, it really is an exciting development for the school and we are really looking forward to having it up and running,” he said.

The donor, who has links with the technology sector, chose the school because of its previous technology initiatives.

“They knew our attitude to IT and our history of integrating it into our teaching,” the principal explained. “We have a good history and are seen as a school that is progressive.”

The school is overhauling its use of technology, installing wifi and mobile management systems, as well as new training for teachers.

“This is not a gimmick,” he insists. “We really want this to be integrated into the children’s learning through proper educational applications. This will revolutionise the way we teach, but it is completely child-centred learning.”
