It's hard to believe it's that time of year again, but a new school term is only around the corner - and you'll want to know you have everything ticked off your checklist nice and early. And with the inevitable back to school rush, you don't want anything falling through the cracks or any last minute panicking! Below are seven things you absolutely won't want to forget before the school bell rings.

1. Covers for the school books

This can often be a last minute job, but it is worth spending an evening doing. The school books themselves can cost a fair bit depending on how many you have to buy, so at the very least you want to be sure they are protected from rips, ink-stains and whatever else may end up on them (some things just aren't worth knowing). Get the older kids to pitch in and help too. And speaking of books, double check you have the right ones - the list the school gives you will save you having to panic and will ensure you only buy exactly what you need.

2. All-important stationery

We may not have jumped with joy at the thoughts of a new school year, but we did love buying all the new stationery. They can never have enough pens and pencils (and as there will be special offers on, you could buy a spare pack to keep at home) and don't forget the ruler, rubber, sharpener and nice new pencil case so that everything stays together.

3. A new lunch box

Even if they've formed an attachment to the one they currently have, let's be honest, it's had food in it for weeks on (yes, even though you've washed it!) end, so a fresh one is probably a good idea. And they have likely grown out of the one they had last year anyhow. Opt for a brightly coloured one that'll be easy for them to dig out of a packed school bag.

4. The uniform

Ah, the school staple. You'll need everything, from shirts to ties, skirts, trousers and socks. And because you're buying a lot (especially if you have more than one child), you'll want to know you're buying items that are made of quality, as well as being value for money. Lidl's own brand of uniforms (on sale from Monday, 16th July 'while stocks last') have been made with TLC, are reasonably priced and built to withstand any rips, stains or wear and tear. Happy days.

5. Check the shoes

Now is the time to check if your little one needs new shoes. Get them to try on their old ones and if they fit fine, spruce them up with a polish. Do the same with their runners, popping them in the washing machine if they need a good clean. If they're looking worn, it'll mean they'll soon be needing a new pair so why not buy them when you're buying the rest of the supplies? Lidl will have shoes with all the rest of the supplies on offer so even buying more than one set won't cost an arm and a leg - and they're excellent quality too.

6. Extra copies

These are a must because at least three will get lost the first week, it's an almost sure thing. Plus it helps to have an extra stash for homework. You can buy these in bulk and keep some for a rainy day.

7. A coat

Come September there'll start to be a chill in the air and more than a sprinkle of rain too no doubt, so your child needs a sturdy raincoat to get them through the year. Check and see if their current one still fits and if not, make sure the new one has, at the very least, a nice big hood.
