The makers of the Date One Direction dating sim app are in hot water after it was discovered it showed ads for adult dating sites.

Date One Direction is a free app made by Digiclub which allows players to virtually date the five members of the boy band.

It’s one of the most popular apps by the company, with over 1.5 million downloads since its launch in 2012.

Despite the app advertising itself as suitable for children as young as nine, it displays ads from the adult dating site Zoosk, offering users a “free Zoosk download”.

Zoosk commented on the controversy, claiming they had no idea about this ad placement and that they would have it removed.

"We were not aware that our ad was placed in this app and we are... working with our advertising vendors to have it removed. Our service is for those 18 and over,” they said in a statement.

Parents have also raised concern about the content of the app itself, which despite marketing itself at children states:

"Do you love One Direction? Have you ever dreamed of dating them? Well now you can!" And, "How about treating Niall to breakfast in bed?

"Or taking Harry for a picnic? Or heating things up with a romantic bubble bath."

The suggestion to a nine-year-old of sharing a bath with the adult band members has understandably caused controversy.

Digiclub have not yet commented on these issues.
