Eight-year-old Kate Deegan was just five when she was accidently locked in a classroom for 25 minutes back in 2013.

And today, the youngster has been awarded €20,000 in the Circuit Civil Court after suing the trustees and board of management of Mourne Road National School, Drimnagh, Co. Dublin for negligence through her mother Andrea, according to the Irish Times.

The incident happened in December three years ago when Kate, who was leaving the classroom with her peers to go on morning break, was asked to leave her book in the room.

However, when she went to leave the room she realised it was locked and couldn’t get out. It was also reported that the windows were also locked and the lights were turned off.

Understandably the little girl was extremely distressed and was crying and knocking on the door.

Following the incident, she missed several days of school and subsequently developed an adjustment disorder which required play therapy sessions.

Through her mother and her solicitors, Kate claimed that the school failed to take reasonable care and that there was no proper system in place for checking classrooms.

It was also claimed that the school did not exercise adequate supervision.
