The school holidays can be challenging for any parent, particularly for working parents. The best weapon for success is to plan well in advance, read our tips on how to survive the summer:
  • Plan ahead: It might seem obvious but you would be surprised how many parents reach the week before the school holidays and realise they have no arrangements made for the kids!
  • Think about your child's interests: Are they sporty, crafty or do they have an interest in science? Book your child into camps or work-shops with a friend.
  • Speak to other mums: There will be plenty of other mums in the same boat as you, perhaps you could even alternate picking up and collecting the kids from school holiday activities..
  • Speak with your employer: Is there a chance for you to work flexi time during the school holidays or take parental leave?
  • Give the grandparents a call: Many grandparents will be delighted to get the chance to spend more time with the kids.
  • Prioritise with your partner: Check to see if your partner can take some time off during the summer to take care of the kids.
Remember, it's normal to feel guilty that you are working instead of spending time with the kids. Accept the fact that you will have to spend more money entertaining the kids while you work during the summer holidays.

Book a family holiday: It might be cost more to book a vacation during July and August but there is really no better family activity than a fun-filled holiday! If you're on a budget why not go on a camping trip?
