There are lots of things that parents can do to help their child get the most out of homework and study.
Follow these tips for stress-free homework time:
- Find a quiet room at home for your child to use as a homework area. Your child should have a desk, a good light source and the right equipment e.g. pens, pencils, ruler, markers, calculator and more.
- Be familiar of modern teaching methods, e.g. methods of doing long division may have changed in recent times.
- Make a homework timetable and agree on when your child will do their homework.
- Allow your child to have something healthy to eat before starting on homework.
- Talk about any homework projects with your child and discuss how it ties in with what they are studying at school.
- Turn off the TV and any other distractions.
- Don't give your child the answer in order to speed things along. Instead, offer helpful advice on how to look up information or find a word in a dictionary.
- Try not to teach your child methods you learned when you were at school, things may have changed and it could confuse them.
- Don't let homework become a chore. Keep it fun and make it a special time that you both look forward to.
