Sending your little one off to school for the first time can be emotional.  It's only natural - you've been able to protect them almost all of the time since the day they were born, and now? They have to go fend for themselves in the big bad world of school.

Don't worry though, they'll be fine and so will you. Here are some tips on how to deal with your little one starting school:

Take the day off
If you're a working mum, it's not a bad idea to take the day off so that you can bring your child to school without watching the clock. They may be a little anxious about leaving you, so it's nice to have the time to let them settle in before you go.

Meet other mums
If you have a group of friends who also have children starting school for the first time, you should all meet up after you've dropped them off and go for a coffee. It'll be great to be able to share your worries and concerns with other mums, and it'll make you realise that you're not alone in feeling the way you do - which is always a help.

Keep busy
Hanging around the house all day wondering how they're getting on isn't going to help, so try and keep busy. It'll take your mind off it and the day will go much faster. Before you know it, they'll be home again and telling you all about their exciting day.

Continue as normal for younger siblings
If you have other children at home who aren't in school yet, they may be missing their older sibling just as much as you are. Keep them busy so that they don't notice their brother or sister's absence quite so much - this will help to take your mind off it too.

Come up with a new routine
If you don't have any children at home during the school hours anymore, you should come up with a new routine for yourself. Pick up a new hobby or if you've been saying you were going to start to work again, this is your chance.

Relax
Don't let your imagination run away with itself - your little one will be fine. Remember that you've raised a smart, confident child who can look after themselves, and be ready to give them a big hug when they get home.
