Riding bikes or scooters are a great way to ensure your little one stays fit and healthy. However, it is important they wear a helmet whenever they are on either of these to ensure they are adequately protected against falls.

Here is the correct way to fit your little one’s helmet:

Make sure it fits their head
If you are buying a helmet for the first time, it is important you make sure it fits correctly. Don’t go for one that your youngster will grow into. While this is a good idea when it comes to buying clothes, it is important your little one’s helmet fits snugly to ensure they are adequately protected. If your child has had their helmet for a while, make sure it still fits them properly. If needed, change the inner padding or remove it as your son or daughter grows.

How should it sit?
The helmet should not be positioned so that the peak is facing up towards the sky. It should, in fact, sit on the forehead about two finger-widths above your little one’s eyebrows.

Adjusting the straps
Make sure the straps are properly adjusted. The side straps should be located around the ears, not over them and the clasp should be positioned under the chin. It should be pulled tight but not so much that it is uncomfortable. The best way to see if it is tight enough is to do the finger test – if more than two fingers fit between the strap and chin, it is too loose.

Final check
Before your send your little one off, give the helmet one final check. Get your child to shake their head slightly to ensure it doesn’t wobble. Put your hand underneath the front of the helmet and push it up – if it moves easily, you need to tighten the straps. Slightly move the helmet with your hands while looking at your child’s face. If it is fitted correctly, your little one’s skin should move slightly with it but it shouldn't hurt them.

Remember, every time you put on your little one’s helmet, make sure it fits correctly, especially as kids grow so quickly.
