The school gate is a hive of mums all with different personalities so it’s not unusual that you will clash with at least one. From the busy-bodies to the slackers there will always be a mum who really gets on your nerves.

However, while simply ignoring them is one way to handle it, if you are dreading back to school just at the thoughts of bumping into them, keep in mind the following tips:

1. Just say no

There will always be the mum who makes you feel guilty for not being able to take part in school events because you have to work, but never feel guilty for saying no.

2. Be confident in your own abilities

Every school gate has a least one mother who will always try to be the better one, but by being confident in your own parenting abilities you’ll always win. Never let them make you feel inadequate or incapable - you are all doing your very best.

3. Be assertive

If you are involved in the Parents Association or have signed up to help out at an event and are struggling to get volunteers to sign up to help, be assertive. Whether it's for the sports day, bake sale or parents' night out, you should never have to make up for anyone else’s slacking.

4. Just smile

Don’t let comments from a negative mum ruin the rest of your day. No matter what they say smile it off – you are better than them. No one has the right to make you feel upset or bad about yourself and if they feel the need to be mean then that's a bad reflection on them as people.

5. Involve yourself

There will always be cliques, no matter what situation you are in, but don’t let them put you off making friends – find something you want to help out with and do it.

6. Ignore the gossip

Don’t become one of the women that you hate simply to fit in. You have nothing to prove and no amount of gossiping will ever make you real friends.
