While most of the teaching is done by your child’s teacher in class, parental involvement is key to helping your youngster do well in school.

Here are six ways you can help your child do well in school:

Talk to them
Ask your child about their school day and make sure they are aware that you are interested. Asking them questions about interesting things they learned will encourage them to think about their day and remember what their teacher taught them.

Start a library at home
This is a great way to get your child interested in reading and to instil a love for it in them. You don’t need to spend a fortune, simply encourage your little one to swop books with kids in their class and go to the local library to borrow. If you child asks can they stay up a bit later to read, let them. Ten minutes of reading time alone will help them to develop their skills.

Be aware of your own attitude
Always be aware of your attitude towards your child’s school, as your little one will pick up on it. If you have an issue with your kid’s teacher never voice your opinion in front of them. They will end up bringing this negativity into school and it may affect their performance.

Talk about report cards
No matter their age, when your little one’s report card is due talk to them about what they expect their teacher to say. Make it a positive experience and if the results are not what your youngster expected, talk to them about what they think happened and how they feel about their teacher’s remarks.

Show them how others became successful
If your little one is struggling in a particular subject show them others who struggled in the same way but managed to succeed.  It may help motivate your child to push that little bit harder and to not give up.

Helping with homework
When it comes to homework, encourage your child to start on what they consider to be the hard subjects first. Starting with a fresh mind will make it easier to tackle the hard questions.

The best way to help your child do well in school is to praise them as often as possible, even if they come home with low grades.
