Having a good work ethic is an important skill that your child should be taught from an early age. Not only is it important for when your little one becomes an adult, it is also something they need when they are in school or doing chores at home.
Here are six ways to enourage your child to have a good work ethic:
Model hard work for them
If you are not working hard, why should you expect your little ones to work hard as well? Model the behaviour that you would like them to exhibit.
Make work fun
Work doesn’t have to be about boring chores or doing things they don’t want. Try to make it fun if at all possible. Give them fun pens or pencils to do their homework with or put on some music when they are cleaning their room. Why not have a race to see who can get their chores done first. This will help them understand that work doesn’t have to be dull.
Volunteer
Take your youngster with you when you volunteer at the local charity shop or village fete. Helping others is key to building value of work and to understand how their role both affects and helps others.
Praise them
When they do a good job make sure you give them plenty of praise. Try not to dwell if your child does something wrong or not quite the way you would like them to. Always offer them more praise than criticism, otherwise they will begin to feel that even when they try to do right, they do wrong.
Consider their age
When you are giving your litle one a job try not to give them something too complicated – stick within their age group. A job that your son or daughter struggles with or simply can’t do, will make them feel frustrated and annoyed making them not want to do anything at all.
Share jobs
The best way to teach a good work ethic is to help them understand the ripple effect their job has on others. You can do this by sharing the household chores between the family. This way, if one person doesn't do their job your youngster will understad how this can affect another person's job.
