No matter how careful you are, as your little one grows their curiosity can often mean they wander off when out and about. This means it is just as important to teach your preschooler about 'stranger danger' as it is your big kid.

And while you don’t want to scare them, especially at such a young age, it is vital they are at least aware of it.

Tell them what a stranger is

Your little one won’t understand what a stranger is without your telling them. Without making them feel frightened of every person they meet, it is important they understand that a stranger is someone they don’t know.

Inform them of people who are 'safe strangers'

This can be a little confusing for young kids to understand, but it is important they realise that not all strangers are bad. Teach them about 'safe strangers' like a policeman, a fireman, a teacher or a security person. Point them out to your preschooler so that they know who are 'safe strangers' and introduce them to a policeman or woman, etc. so they feel comfortable talking to them.

Teach them what to do if they get lost

As it so easily happens, it is important your preschooler knows what to do if they ever become lost. Teach them to stay where they are or to find a 'safe stranger'. Write your contact number on their clothes and show them where it is located so they can let whoever finds them know. Make sure they know to never go off with someone.

Teach what to do if they are scared of someone they don’t know

While we all do our upmost to watch our little ones, it is important they know what to do if approached by a stranger. While your youngster is not likely to know if they are in danger, it is important they know what to do if they ever feel unsafe: tell them to yell for Mummy, scream at the top of their voice or find a 'safe stranger'.
