We all know that we need to have eyes in the back of our heads when little ones are around, but it bears repeating that we need to be vigilant for safety hazards.

This is the advice of British mum Emma Patterson, whose daughter Libbie was recently scalded by a cup of hot tea sitting in the kitchen.

Recalling the incident to local newspaper the Stoke Sentinal, Emma said: “The cup was close to the edge of the work surface, and she reached up and grabbed it. It went over her face, shoulders, stomach and back.”

The 16-month-old was left screaming and crying as the skin on her face began to ‘peel and blister’.

Libbie was rushed to hospital, where she spent three days receiving treatment for her burns.

While doctors don’t think Libbie will be left permanently ‘disfigured’ after the accident, mum Emma wants to make sure that other parents are aware of the dangers of simple household objects.

“I want to make parents aware of how easily things like this can happen. We didn’t have a child gate on the kitchen, but I do now. I’ve learned all the lessons…I am horrified by the situation,” she said.
