A father from Pottery Road in Dún Laoghaire, who was found guilty of sexually abusing his daughter, has had his sentenced tripled on appeal.

74-year-old Patrick O' Brien, who was accused and convicted of raping his daughter Fiona Doyle between 1973 and 1982, was originally sentenced to 12 years in prison with nine suspended due to the accused's age and declining health.

However on appealing that decision, the court decided to triple O' Brien's sentence meaning he will actually serve 9 years in prison.

The Court of Appeal ruled last month that the original sentence was too lenient regardless of the accused's medical conditions.

It was noted however that if O' Brien's health deteriorates any further, the executive has the power to grant remission.
