The Growing Up In Ireland study previously revealed that one in every four Irish children are overweight – and the evidence of the findings is there for all to see.

According to a school uniform supplier, there has been a surge in demand for plus-size children’s uniforms.

Jonathan Eakin, who owns Hunter Schoolwear in Cavan, made the concerning revelation during an interview on RTÉ’s Today with Sean O’Rourke.

He told the show host that orders for trousers with larger waistlines, and shirts and jumpers with larger bust sizes have been rolling in.

“Ten years ago, we brought in a special elasticated pants for primary school kids,” he explained.

“At the time, we started with a 28-inch waist, and did it up to a 36-inch waist. But now, we do it up to a 46-inch waist.

“We are talking mainly boys, but we do a pants with expanded waist for primary school girls as well.”

Mr Eakin also revealed that his store have had to stock up on 50-inch waist trousers for secondary school students. They have, however, received requests for trousers catering to larger sizes again.

The revelations, which were met with shock by listeners to the show, come just weeks after authors of the European Heart Index expressed concern for the nation’s health.

The Index ranks cardiovascular healthcare systems around the world. This year, Ireland ranked in 12th place; and while the authors commended our standard of healthcare treatment, our poor lifestyle habits were condemned.

Among the greatest criticisms were our high obesity levels, lack of time allocated for exercise in schools, and sugar and alcohol consumption levels.
