An 11-year-old boy from Byker in Newcastle was overjoyed to learn that he had won a place at Eton College - a school which he was determined to attend after learning about it while watching CBeebies some years ago.

Tyrese George, who moved from Birmingham to inner-city Newcastle at the age of seven, impressed officials at the prestigious school and has subsequently been offered a scholarship to attend as a boarder from the age of 13.

Commenting on his tenacity and determination, Tyrese's current head teacher, Linda Bradley, said: "He saw Eton on CBeebies and decided there and then he liked it and was going to go. He sent off for a brochure himself."

Explaining the process Tyrese underwent in order to fulfill his dream, Ms. Bradley went on to say: "He went to Eton at the end of May to sit lots of exams and have interviews. He’s a rapper so he did some of that as well."

Having sat tests in a number of subjects including English, maths and science, Tyrese was informed he was in the top 50% and subsequently offered a place out of thousands of hopeful children.

Described as a 'good all-rounder' by the school which boasts alumni including the Duke of Cambridge and Prime Minister, David Cameron, Tyrese is understandably overjoyed by the news.

Acknowledging that the hard work doesn't stop now, the good-humoured schoolboy joked that in addition to maintaining his grades, he 'must not be naughty'.

Paying tribute to her student, Ms Bradley asserts: "He’s obviously very intelligent. He likes his rapping but he’s also very sporty. He’s helped us win three tournaments - in basketball, rugby and football."

Tyrese is the first pupil from Byker Primary School to secure a place in Eton.

Congratulations Tyrese!
