It’s important to remember what you consider scary and what your child may consider terrifying can be worlds apart. While you may not let him see a movie on TV in case he gets nightmares later, he may also find the nightly TV news more terrifying than anything.

The effects of your child viewing something frightening on TV can be short term resulting in crying or feeling very afraid. Or it can have longer term effects such as being left alone, or feeling anxious about personal safety.

TV News
The TV news reports the day’s events in Ireland and around the world, and while it’s a good idea to get them interested in current affairs, the news can often feature violent images that can appear very graphic to children.

This can lead children to get a warped view of the world and see it only as a place of war, famine, murder and mayhem. It can make them feel anxious about the safety of their family and friends so it’s a good idea to watch it together and answer any questions to help dispel any fears they may have.
