A four-year-old boy was ordered to leave a restaurant because his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles t-shirt violated the “gentlemen’s dress code”.

Lewis Roberts and his family had been hoping to dine out at The Tavern in Atlanta, the US, when staff ordered them out because the little boy’s top did not have sleeves.

The shocked family tried to argue that clothing policies should only apply to adults, but the waitress insisted they had to go.

Lewis’ aunt said,  “If we would have thought for a minute that he was inappropriately dressed, we would have gone to a different restaurant to save the embarrassment.”

Lewis' family said the little boy was left very upset at the time.

After initially refusing to comment, the restaurant has now apologised, saying their rules do not apply to children.

Spokesperson for The Tavern Amber Stewart said, “It was an embarrassing misunderstanding on our part she's a manager in training who had a gross misunderstanding of our policy.

"We apologise and are reaching out to the family.”
