The internet has reacted in awe and terror to a photo of a 10-year-old surfer’s close shave with a great white shark.

Competitive surfer Eden Hasson, 10, was lucky to escape with his life after a shark was spotted lurking beneath him during a session at Samurai Beach, Australia.

It was Eden’s dad, Chris, who first spotted the deadly creature, while taking photos of his son in action.

From his spot on the rocks, Chris noticed a shadow beneath Eden. He proceeded to flick back through his photos, and he was terrified when he zoomed in.

“I zoom in on the second photo and see he’s just done a backhand snap on an eight-foot great white shark’s head,” wrote Chris, sharing the images to Facebook.

The worried dad called everyone in to the shore, and thankfully no one was hurt.

Chris knows, however, that one wrong step would have led to very different results: “Lucky he didn’t fall off.”

Eden, meanwhile, said that while he is a bit ‘worried’ after the encounter, he is not afraid to return to the water.

Needless to say, Chris’ photo has gone viral across social media – and it’s going to be hung in their pool room, at home!
