Major changes to the Irish school admissions system are set to be introduced this week, according to reports.

Sources this morning are claiming that Minister for Education Jan O’Sullivan is set to announce plans aimed at phasing out waiting lists and reforming the acceptance system regarding children of past-pupils.

In an announcement expected to happen tomorrow, it is believed that Minister O’Sullivan will unveil plans to allow schools to reserve a maximum of 10% of places for the children of past-pupils, under the Admission to Schools Bill.

Another key provision of the Bill will be the phasing out of waiting lists, while it will also provide guidance on codes of behaviour.

Elsewhere, charging fees as part of the enrolment process is set to be prohibited under this new Bill, while schools are also expected to be able to favour sibling of existing pupils as well as children of staff when it comes to enrolment selection.

With the provisions set to be formally announced by the Minister tomorrow, we will keep you updated as the Bill is rolled out.
