Minister for Education, Ruairí Quinn announced his resignation as a Cabinet Minister this afternoon.

The Labour Party member said it was a considered decision and that he wanted to make the task of new Labour team easier.

Mr. Quinn confirmed that he would not be seeking re-election as a TD.

“I will not seek to continue as a member of Government after the election of the new leader of the Labour party. I will not seek re-election at the next general election. I made my decision on my own behalf for myself. The best thing for me to do was to clear the path for next generation of leadership.”

His announcement is also just days ahead of the Labour Party choosing a new leader.

Ruairí Quinn was appointed Minister of Education and Skills in March 2011.
