The Minister for Education has today unveiled plans to boost the number of children in disadvantaged areas seeing school through to completion.

Richard Bruton will launch the ‘Plan to tackle educational disadvantage’, in a bid to improve literacy and numeracy, and boost completion rates in schools around the country.

The aim of the plan, according to the Minister, is to ‘make sure every child has the opportunity to fulfil their potential’.

The plan will centre around the Deis (Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools) scheme, which is currently implemented in around 800 schools in disadvantaged areas.

According to the Irish Times, around 80 more schools will be added to the Deis scheme, with an estimated 100 actions to be rolled out in fulfilment of the plan.

These actions will include bringing back guidance counselling, introducing a wellbeing programme in the junior cycle, and the appointment of a team of additional psychologists.

Following a major review, the plan is set to be implemented in schools across the country in 2018.
