Any parent with kids of school-going age will know only too well how expensive school uniforms can be; they usually need to be replaced every year, and they sometimes require repairs in between that time.

Naturally, then, parents in the Republic of Ireland are quite keen to see the introduction of generic uniforms – which is why they will likely be very disappointed by today’s news.

According to reports, Minister for Education Richard Bruton has ruled out the introduction of legislation compelling schools to allow their students to wear generic uniforms.

Minister Bruton said his decision was influenced by recent statistics showing that the price of school uniforms is dropping.

The issue is not yet dead in the water, however; the Minister confirmed that he will be overseeing the introduction of a parents’ charter, which will "provide that parents will be protected, and they will require to be consulted in respective to any decisions that are made”.

He added that the charter will ensure that parents’ views are taken into consideration at local level when it comes to issues such as school uniforms.

Do you think Minister Bruton’s charter will go far enough?
